It was a tough loss against an excellent Vikings team.  Congrats to Brett Farve and his team. He did a great job and I know even he was nervous down to the last second, he didn’t even watch the field goal attempt… but that missed field goal didn’t loose the Ravens the game.  Sure, it didn’t win it for them, but it didn’t loose it either.

All I have heard after the game today was that if we had Matt Stover we would have won that game.  Yeah, we may have.  Stover is an excellent kicker and I know Baltimore will miss him on their team.  I’m not happy that he is now signed to another team and we don’t have any chance of getting him back now, but we must move forward, not look back and think what could have been.

Steve Hauschka is a young kicker.  This season he has proven he can make field goals and extra points.  But no one remembers those when you miss a field goal that could win a game for your team.

Flacco had an outstanding game, he had a career high 385 yards passing and held his own against the legendary Brett Farve, yet we still didn’t win.  Looking at that stat, you would have thought we should have won, and by more then just 2 points that it would have been the score is the kick was good.  The Ravens rallied in the end, but it wasn’t enough.  If they had gotten that momentum earlier in the game, it would have been a blow out.

My point this week is you can’t blame one person and one missed kick for a loss.  It’s a whole team effort.  What do I think the team needs to work on and focus on as they go in to the Bye week… Pass defense.  That’s really the weakest part of the team that I see.  Get that solid and we will once again be a force to be reckoned with.

Remember, even when you say “it’s his job to make field goals, that’s what he gets paid to do, he sucks cause he missed” remember doctors get paid to save your life and fix you.  That’s way more important then kicking a field goal and even they make mistakes.  Don’t be so judgmental…

And if you want someone to blame… you can point fingers at me.  I flew my Ravens flag every game but the last 2 when I wasn’t home and forgot to put it up before I left the house… and we lost.  Well, today I almost forgot to fly it but I remembered at half time… right around the time the game turned around (account for some time for the player to realize it was flying on the other side of the country)… They play better when the flag at our house flies high.  Don’t worry; it’ll be up every day for the rest of the season!

You may have noticed the overwhelming abundance of pink splattered all over players from every NFL team this past weekend.  The reason for this is simple.  October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

As a member of Zeta Tau Alpha, this makes my heart jump with joy.  Zeta’s national philanthropy is breast cancer education and awareness, so for the past 7 years October has been a very meaningful and busy month for me… from tying huge pink ribbons around trees on campus and hanging self-check reminder cards in showers to bouncing on exercise balls for hours on end to raise money and handing out pink ribbons to everyone I saw.

A few years ago the NFL teamed up with ZTA to promote breast cancer awareness even more.  This year the Ravens have invited collegiate and alumnae members of ZTA to the Ravens v Bengals game this coming weekend, October 11th.  We will be out in full force before the game at Ravens Walk and the corporate tents talking with fans and handing out pink ribbons for everyone to wear.  Then once the gates open, you will find us at Gate A; reminding everyone how important it is to know about breast cancer and to remember to check yourself!

So come dressed in your Ravens gear with a hint of pink to support a VERY important cause, oh yeah, and watch the best team in the NFL destroy those pesky Bengals….

So for the month of October, and the rest of the year… remember to THINK PINK!

For four years I went to college in West Virginia and spent every football season listening to all of my friends rave about how wonderful the Steelers are and how much the Ravens suck.  Now, I don’t like the Steelers, nor will I EVER cheer for them, but I can admit that they are a good team.  I have come to the conclusion that even in their off years, especially right now at this point when the Ravens are definitely out performing them, that Steeler fans do not have this capability.

I am dedicating this post to my rebuttal for the only three arguments that my friends seem to have against the Ravens.  You decide for yourself.

1. The Steelers have one six Super Bowls, the Ravens have only won one.  Obviously the Steelers are a better team.

Ok… on the surface this seems like a valid argument, if you are completely uneducated in football.  I am not downplaying that the Steelers have won six times, and I congratulate them on this, but let’s look at the real facts.  The Steelers were founded in 1933.  They were called the Pirates then, but they have always been the Pittsburgh team (during the depression they merged with some other teams to have enough players, but always in Pittsburgh).  In 1940 they changed their name to the Steelers.  Now, I know that Super Bowl was not around then, but there were playoffs, and the Steelers (under any name) did not make it to these playoffs until 1947.  That’s 14 years it took them to make it to the playoffs.  Normal for a young team.  They have been around a while now so you would think they could make it to, and win some Super Bowls, like I said, they are a good team.  The Ravens came to Baltimore in 1996.  They did come from Cleveland, but they came as an expansion team.  The agreement stipulated that the Browns' name, colors, uniform design and franchise records would remain in Cleveland.  The Ravens were an expansion team, a new franchise.  They won the Super Bowl in 2000, after being around for 4 years… lets look at that fact! Pretty good if you ask me… and the Ravens are only 13 years old; by Steelers standards we shouldn’t even be going to the playoffs til next year…

2. The Ravens have a team full of murders.

Yeah, Ray Lewis was at the wrong place at the wrong time.  If you believe in the justice system, this wouldn’t even be an argument… he was acquitted… which means found not guilty.  “Big Ben” right now is fighting a sexual assault charge.  If and when he is found not guilty am I still allowed to make comments about how I wouldn’t ever want to be left in a room alone with him? How do you think that would go over with Steeler fans?

3. The Steelers are only loosing because Troy Polamalu is hurt and hasn’t been playing.

Really? Ok, he is an exceptional player.  However, football is a TEAM sport.  Come on, I really can’t believe I have to argue this one.  If a team can’t win because one player is hurt and not playing, are they really that good of a team? Stop making excuses.

That’s it.  I am sure if any Steeler fans read this, they’ll have some other reason for me that the Steelers are better then the Ravens.  But right now we are #1 in the division… the Steelers are #3… let the rankings speak for themselves.

There is a house in my development that is tiny.  It would be tiny if it were a single family home, but it’s a duplex, and from what I can tell there are a large number of people living in both sides of the house.  I’m pretty convinced that this house has to have multiple basements so it can accommodate all the people that live there, with each one offering something different to the house… a kitchen, a living room, bedrooms, bathrooms, ect.  It’s a well kept house though and it blends in.  If you asked most people where the tiny duplex at the end of the road was, they wouldn’t be able to tell you.  However, if you asked where the house with the orange car that is always being worked on is, most people in the neighborhood, and even those that don’t live here would be able to tell you exactly where it is.

Ok, I know it seems to take a while to get to my point… but here it is.  The NFL sure is overlooking the Ravens and some of the awesome talent that this team has.  Sure, if you asked anyone what team Ray Lewis or Ed Reed plays for, it would take about 2 seconds for them to tell you.  But ask someone from Detroit who Tom Zbikowski, Matt Katula, Sam Koch, or Domonique Foxworth are odds are they won’t be able to tell you.  These guys are just some of the outstanding guys that don’t get all the attention that some of the “bigger names” get.  Would you be able to live in a house without a kitchen or a bathroom?  I think it would be just as hard for a team to function without a Safety who can take you down in one shot, one of the best Long Snappers in the league, a Punter who can pretty consistently drop the ball at the 3 yard line, or a hometown Cornerback who can play both corners great.

These guys and the rest of the Ravens offer layers to the team that are often over looked by the NFL and other teams because they seem to just blend in.  Sure, they won all 4 preseason games, but those are just that- preseason games, they don’t count.  Who cares that we went 11-5 in the regular season last year with a  rookie head coach and quarter back, and lost in the AFC championship game to the team that went on to win the Super bowl… it was just a fluke.

If you ask me, I say keep overlooking us.  It’ll be that much more of a surprise to the rest of the world come February.  Here in Baltimore, we’ll be waiting.

I love football.  I respect the players.  I go to training camp, watch the practice, and try to push my way to the fence in hopes of getting my football signed by some of the players.  This year was a little more difficult to get over to camp though with a little one in tow.  Yes, I work in Westminster and live not too far away, but nap times are from 10-12 and 3:30-4:30 and unless I want to be up all night, I better not break that schedule.

On one of the nicer days though, my husband and I packed up our little princess (and the rest of the house that seems to be necessary when we travel with her) and headed over to McDaniel in hopes of meeting some of the players.  After waiting during the two hour practice, and trying to keep my mouth shut while listening to some people that I would have a hard time even admitting I am from the same state as, we hear the horn at the end of practice.  Finally.  Then we realize, just our luck, none of the players are heading our way.  They are all going straight to the building for meetings.

Ok, what is my point? Not ALL of the Ravens headed right to the gym.  There were five players that came out to sign autographs.  No one would have noticed if they just went up with the rest of the team, but they didn’t.  There was one player in particular, Derrick Mason, who stood out to me.  Maybe it is because I am now a mother and my priorities and ways I look at people has changed, but he seemed so incredibly genuine that it almost shocked me.  He stopped at every single fan that was standing at the fence, and didn’t just sign whatever they were holding and move on.  He interacted and talked with the fans.  When he got to us (we were about at the halfway point) you could tell he was tired, but he still had the biggest smile on his face like he was just happy to be there and happy to be out there with the fans.  He stopped and asked how old my baby was, said how pretty she is (which goes without saying, but he still did), thanked us for coming out and bringing her, and took a picture with us.

I know that just because you play football doesn’t mean you have to be nice.  I can’t even imagine people calling my name where ever I go because I am “the greatest hot tub salesperson ever” and I am not sure I would want to have to deal with that.  But these guys do and they seem to appreciate all the support that we the fans give to them.  I think I have come to respect the players more for how they treat their fans, the people who watch and cheer for them week after week no matter how cold it is or when nap time happens to be, then how well they play the game.
